Origin and Extraction
Frankincense is a natural resin extracted from Boswellia trees, primarily found in the Arabian Peninsula (Oman, Yemen), Somalia, and parts of Northeast Africa. The resin is harvested by making incisions in the tree bark, allowing the sap to bleed out and harden into tear-shaped resin droplets. These are then collected and steam distilled or solvent extracted to produce the essential oil used in perfumery.
History and Culture
Frankincense has a rich historical and cultural significance, dating back thousands of years. It was highly valued in ancient civilizations like Egypt, where it was used in religious ceremonies, embalming, and as a luxury trade commodity. In many Middle Eastern and African cultures, it has been used in spiritual and medicinal practices, believed to have purifying and healing properties. It plays a significant role in religious rituals, particularly in Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. Notable perfumes featuring frankincense include Comme des Garçons Avignon, Serge Lutens La Fille de Berlin, and Tom Ford Private Blend Tobacco Vanille.
Chemistry and Molecular Structure
Frankincense essential oil is composed primarily of monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes, with key compounds including α-pinene, β-pinene, limonene, and boswellic acids. These molecular structures contribute to its complex aromatic profile, providing the characteristic resinous, woody, and slightly spicy scent. The chemical composition can vary slightly depending on the specific Boswellia species and geographical origin.
