Terror & Magnificence by Beaufort London is a complex fragrance inspired by Georgian architect Nicholas Hawksmoor. It combines elements of ancient Egyptian mysticism with Gothic architectural atmosphere, featuring church incense, candle wax, papyrus, and a distinctive wet stone accord. Created by perfumer Pia Long in 2019, it represents the dark and mysterious elements of Hawksmoor's architectural legacy.

How does BeauFort London Terror & Magnificence smell?

A powerful smoky opening of birch tar and black pepper leads into a complex heart of ancient Egyptian Kyphi incense, frankincense, and papyrus. The base reveals deep notes of Haitian vetiver, myrrh, and a unique stone accord, supported by warm benzoin and labdanum. The overall effect is dark, resinous, and ceremonial.

For people who want to make a statement

The opening is musty, moldy with spice and resin. Birch tar makes it possible. Truly, it exudes no romance at all, rather gothic vibes. It takes on something of handmade paper (papyrus), which makes the fragrance somewhat dull. Even incense sticks, where a fragrance note seems to have been forgotten, don't change that. Still birch tar. A typical fragrance from the house of Beaufort, I think. I like it, I have similar "exotics". Colleagues liked it too. Testing before buying is essential.

Dark, oppressive, ancient

If ancient evil had a smell, it would be Terror and Magnificence. What keeps it from being a 10/10 for me is the slightly strange hint in the base notes, something nearly "stale" or pungent. I can't say it's bad, I'm just not sure what to make of it yet. Other than that... beautiful and interesting fragrance.

Pagan shrine

Birch tar and a certain saltiness make me think of stones by the sea, candles and incense as offerings to Freya. Beautiful and unusual, but I don't get the cathedral vibe.
