Birch tar is produced by the destructive distillation of birch bark at high temperatures. Traditionally, this process involved heating birch bark in a closed container with limited oxygen, causing the bark to break down and release a dark, thick tar-like substance. Modern extraction methods have been refined to create more controlled and pure birch tar essential oil.
