Details on BeauFort London Rake & Ruin

Inspired by the works of satirist William Hogarth, Rake & Ruin by Beaufort London is a debauched fragrance that captures the essence of gin-soaked 18th century London. Created by perfumer Julie Dunkley in 2018, this bold composition combines botanical gin ingredients with dark woods, smoke, and animalic notes.

How does BeauFort London Rake & Ruin smell?

A complex blend dominated by smoky accords throughout all stages, featuring realistic gin notes with juniper and angelica. The composition evolves from initial cigarette ash and gin towards green, pine-like forest notes, complemented by leather, costus, and castoreum. The base reveals dry woods, musk, and ambergris notes, creating a narrative of debauchery and wilderness.

Nice light breeze

It is a lovely fragrance, lemony and smoky, where coriander and pepper evolve like a mysterious veil toward a slightly aquatic aromatic scent (reminiscent of Davidoff's Cool Water Woman). A mid-season perfume that is easily wearable on a daily basis.

Ah yes, pine tar, gin, and smoke... the ultimate "light aquatic breeze" similar to Cool Water Woman. Brilliant copypasta, 10/10 wrong page.

Have you tried it? Because it really smells like this, at least to me. That was rather surprising, obviously.

Sure thing, i received complaints, (or rather compliments), in my circle that i smell like smoked-out pub in industrial England. So, no- there's literally nothing mineral/aquatic in composition. However, it does fade into pleasant piney scent of gin afterwards.

Eh bien soit ils se sont trompés sur l'échantillon, soit mon nez est trop habitué aux parfums de ce style..

Honestly, I'd be more inclined to suspect a sample mix- up than to associate rake&ruin with cool water, that would explain quite a lot. I can't say I ever encountered same comparison before.

Can it get any smokier? Hardly.

Rake & Ruin smokes so heavily that it is initially off-putting - at least that was my experience on the first try. "Who the hell wants to smell like an ashtray?". But as with almost all BeauForts, something more happens. After the smoke has cleared a bit (and really just a very tiny "bit"), gin and licorice shimmer through. I also imagine smelling a hint of musk. According to my nose, there is absolutely nothing fruity here, but the frequently made comparison to a smoky pub/rehearsal room is entirely accurate. The most unique BeauFort so far, not an everyday scent - but you should at least have sampled it.

The morning after.

The night is over. The gin is empty, the smoke still hangs in the air, and the leather jacket smells of ash. This is exactly the image Rake & Ruin paints on my skin. Juniper and gin give the opening a bitter freshness, before dense smoke, dry wood, and a dirty-animalic depth take control. Not a fragrance that wants to please – but one that shows character. Wild, uncompromising, and yet fascinating. Those who love dark, smoky scents will find no comfort zone here, but an experience.
