Origin and Extraction
Iris (orris root) is extracted from the rhizomes of certain iris species, primarily Iris pallida, Iris germanica, and Iris florentina. The root is harvested, dried for 3-5 years, and then ground into a powder. The extraction process is complex and expensive, involving steam distillation or solvent extraction to produce iris butter or iris absolute.
History and Culture
Iris has a rich history dating back to ancient civilizations. In Greece, it was associated with the goddess Iris and symbolized communication and messages. In perfumery, it became particularly prominent in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with famous perfumes like Jicky by Guerlain (1889) highlighting its unique qualities. The most prized iris comes from Florence, Italy, giving rise to the term 'Florentine iris'.
Chemistry and Molecular Structure
The distinctive scent of iris comes from its key chemical compounds, primarily irones (alpha and beta), which are ketones responsible for its characteristic powdery and woody aroma. These compounds develop during the lengthy root-drying process, creating complex molecular structures that give iris its unique olfactory profile.
