Origin and Extraction
Sandalwood is primarily a natural ingredient derived from the heartwood of Santalum trees, mainly found in India (Mysore), Australia, and New Caledonia. It's extracted through steam distillation or CO2 extraction.
History and Culture
Sandalwood has been used for centuries in religious ceremonies, traditional medicines, and as a source of incense, especially in India, where it is considered sacred and associated with spirituality and tranquility. It's widely used in both classic and modern fragrances for its versatility and ability to create traditional and contemporary effects. It's a key ingredient in well-known perfumes such as Samsara by Guerlain, Tam Dao by Diptyque, and Santal 33 by Le Labo.
Chemistry and Molecular Structure
The main components of sandalwood are santalols (alpha-santalol, beta-santalol) which are sesquiterpenes, whose molecular structure leads to its characteristic creamy, warm, and woody odor profile.
