Musk is a complex, sensual fragrance note characterized by warm, soft, intimate, and slightly animalistic undertones. Originally, musk was derived from the musk deer, a small deer native to the mountainous regions of Asia. Today, due to conservation efforts, most musk in perfumery is synthetic, created through various chemical processes that replicate the original animal-derived scent. Synthetic musks can be obtained through organic synthesis, including nitro musks, polycyclic musks, and macrocyclic musks.
