Origin and Extraction
Originally, musk was derived from the musk deer, a small deer native to the mountainous regions of Asia. Today, due to conservation efforts, most musk in perfumery is synthetic, created through various chemical processes that replicate the original animal-derived scent. Synthetic musks can be obtained through organic synthesis, including nitro musks, polycyclic musks, and macrocyclic musks.
History and Culture
Musk has a rich history dating back to ancient civilizations. It was highly prized in traditional medicine and perfumery, particularly in Asian cultures. Historically, musk was more expensive than gold, with traders bringing the precious substance along the Silk Road. Chemistry and Molecular Structure
Synthetic musks are complex organic compounds with various molecular structures.
