Castoreum

Musky Notes
Castoreum has a complex, intense animalic scent profile characterized by leather-like, musky, smoky, and slightly sweet notes. It possesses a deep, rich, and somewhat raw animalistic quality that can range from warm and sensual to slightly harsh and provocative.
Traditionally, castoreum is a natural secretion from the castor sacs of beavers, located near their anal glands. In modern perfumery, synthetic alternatives are predominantly used due to ethical and sustainability concerns. Historically, it was obtained by extracting the secretions from trapped beavers.
