Seaweed has a distinctly marine, iodine-rich, and mineral scent that captures the raw essence of the ocean shore. Origin and Extraction

Seaweed encompasses thousands of species of marine algae found in oceans worldwide, from kelp forests to coastal rock pools. Major harvesting regions include Japan, Korea, Ireland, and Brittany in France. The aromatic compounds can be captured through steam distillation or solvent extraction of dried seaweed, but in perfumery the scent is most often recreated through synthetic marine accords that capture the characteristic saline-mineral profile.

History and Culture

Seaweed has been integral to coastal cultures throughout history. In Japan, it is a cornerstone of cuisine as nori, kombu, and wakame. Celtic and Nordic traditions valued it as food and fertilizer. In perfumery, seaweed represents a more adventurous approach to marine notes that emerged in the 1990s and 2000s, moving beyond the synthetic 'aquatic' trend toward more authentic, naturalistic representations of the sea.

Chemistry and Molecular Structure

The characteristic aroma of seaweed comes from a complex mixture of sulfur compounds, bromophenols, and dimethyl sulfide (DMS), which contribute to its distinctive marine-iodine smell. Fucoxanthin and various halogenated compounds add to its mineral, briny character. In perfumery, these notes are recreated using molecules like Calone (methylbenzodioxepinone), marine aldehydes, and specialized iodine-mineral accords.
