Portuguese Man O' War

To be honest: Portuguese Man O' War by Zoologist is definitely not a fragrance for the masses, but craftsmanship-wise, it's a real statement. The opening, with its sharp ginger-saffron kick and especially the metallic gunpowder note, takes a lot of getting used to – it almost burns a bit in the nose and has absolutely nothing to do with a well-behaved summer aquatic. Anyone looking for a fresh sea breeze here will be overwhelmed at first. But when it settles after a while and the salty algae, sandalwood, and immortelle come through, the fragrance develops an incredibly fascinating, dark, and melancholic depth. It captures this vibe of the open ocean, danger, and rough sailor stories so uniquely and uncompromisingly that you simply have to admire it – even if you will probably wear it rather rarely in everyday life. Not an easy crowd-pleaser, but a true work of art for niche fans.

Of course, I am also influenced by the appearance of the bottle and find the image very fitting for this fragrance! It starts strong and fresh, actually like a saltwater spray. That fades quickly, and then comes this heavy scent that remains for about an hour. To me, it conveys something unhealthy, danger. Afterwards, it transitions into something softer, but still heavy. The image of a grumpy captain sticks in my mind. It was a nice trip for a day, but I personally am not looking for a long-term adventure with it.

The gunpowder and ground ginger in the scent are simply much too dominant for me. Instead of getting that cold, electric jolt of stormy seawater, my skin completely magnified a thick, dry, and almost suffocating layer of sulfurous smoke and heavy spice.
