Origin and Extraction
Galbanum is a natural resin extracted from various species of Ferula, a genus of perennial herbs primarily found in Iran and surrounding regions of the Middle East. The resin is obtained by making incisions in the stems and roots of the plant, allowing the gum-like substance to exude and then harden. Traditional extraction methods include steam distillation and solvent extraction to produce the essential oil used in perfumery.

Galbanum has a long history of use in traditional medicine and perfumery, dating back to ancient civilizations in the Middle East. It was used in ancient Egyptian embalming practices and was mentioned in biblical texts. In perfumery, it gained significant popularity in the mid-20th century, particularly in the 1960s and 1970s, when green fragrances became fashionable. Notable perfumes featuring galbanum include Vent Vert by Balmain and No. 19 by Chanel, which showcased its distinctive green character.

Galbanum's distinctive scent comes from its complex chemical composition, primarily consisting of monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes. Key compounds include beta-caryophyllene, alpha-pinene, and myrcene. These molecules contribute to its sharp, green, and slightly resinous aroma.
