Origin and Extraction
Civet is a natural substance originally obtained from the perineal glands of the civet cat (Viverra civetta), native to Africa and parts of Asia. Traditionally, it was extracted directly from the animal, but modern perfumery now uses synthetic alternatives due to ethical concerns and animal welfare. Synthetic civet is created through complex chemical processes that mimic the original animalic scent profile.
History and Culture
Civet has a long history in perfumery and traditional medicine, dating back to ancient civilizations in Egypt, Arabia, and India. It was highly prized as a rare and exotic ingredient, often used in religious ceremonies and as a valuable trade commodity. Civet's complex scent is primarily composed of various fatty acids and compounds like civetone, a macrocyclic ketone with a molecular formula of C17H32O. These molecules contribute to its distinctive musky, animalic odor profile. Synthetic civet replicates these key molecular structures to create a similar olfactory experience.
