Tuberose

Tuberose is an intensely powerful, heady, and intoxicating white floral note with a rich, narcotic, and almost animalic quality. It has a complex scent profile that is simultaneously sweet, creamy, green, and slightly buttery, with pronounced indolic characteristics that give it a deep, sensual, and almost carnal intensity.
Origin and Extraction
Tuberose (Polianthes tuberosa) is a night-blooming perennial plant native to Mexico. The essential oil is typically extracted through solvent extraction or enfleurage, a traditional method where flower petals are pressed into fat to capture their fragrance. The most prized tuberose comes from India, particularly regions like Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
History and Culture
Tuberose has a rich cultural history, particularly in Mexico and India. In Mexican culture, it was used in traditional ceremonies and considered a symbol of dangerous pleasure. In India, it is often used in wedding garlands and religious ceremonies, symbolizing sensuality and passion. In perfumery, it gained prominence in the early 20th century, becoming a symbol of luxury and exotic femininity in European haute parfumerie.
Chemistry and Molecular Structure
Tuberose's distinctive scent comes from complex chemical compounds including methyl benzoate, benzyl alcohol, and various indole derivatives. The key aromatic molecules responsible for its characteristic scent are methyl anthranilate and indole, which contribute to its intense, almost animalic and narcotic olfactory profile.
