Origin and Extraction
Orris is derived from the rhizome (root) of certain iris species, primarily Iris pallida, Iris germanica, and Iris florentina. The roots are carefully harvested, dried for 3-5 years, and then ground into a fine powder or steam-distilled to produce orris butter or essential oil. The most prized orris comes from the Tuscany region in Italy.
History and Culture
Orris has a rich history dating back to ancient civilizations. The Greeks and Romans used iris roots in perfumery and medicine. During the Renaissance, it became a prized ingredient in European perfumery. In the Victorian era, it was particularly popular in powdery, elegant fragrances. Today, it remains a luxury ingredient, with a single kilogram of high-quality orris root powder costing up to several thousand dollars.
Chemistry and Molecular Structure
The key chemical compounds in orris are irones, which are responsible for its distinctive powdery and woody scent. These are ketones with a complex molecular structure that develops during the aging process of the root. The most important irones are alpha-irone and beta-irone, which contribute to the unique olfactory profile of orris.
