Moss

Moss has a complex, earthy, and green scent profile characterized by damp, woody, slightly musty, and forest-like nuances. Origin and Extraction
Moss is typically extracted from various species of lichens and bryophytes, with oakmoss (Evernia prunastri) and treemoss being the most common in perfumery. Extraction is traditionally done through solvent extraction, producing a rich, concentrated absolute that captures the complex green and earthy characteristics.
History and Culture
Moss has been used in perfumery since the late 19th century, becoming particularly prominent in classic fragrances of the mid-20th century. It has cultural significance in European perfumery, symbolizing nature, wilderness, and sophistication. However, due to IFRA restrictions on oakmoss allergens, synthetic moss notes have become increasingly important in modern perfumery.
