Sven Pritzkoleit's path to perfumery began with a visit to Grasse in 1991 as a pharmacy student, inspired by Patrick Sueskind's novel Das Parfum. While completing his pharmacy degree in 1995 and subsequently running a family-owned pharmacy for 18 years, he quietly pursued his true passion: studying raw materials, reading about composition, and teaching himself the art of perfumery.
His first real composition, Pink Patchouli, was created in 2006. Early encouragement from industry professionals Dr. Philip Kraft of Givaudan and Egon Oelkers of Symrise convinced him to follow his own path. After closing his pharmacy in 2012, he founded SP Parfums in 2016, launching his Essential Collection of ten fresh and woody compositions. That same year he published Duftspuren, a German-language book that is part memoir, part guide for aspiring perfumers.
Pritzkoleit's creative approach combines vintage-style classic perfumery with modern molecules in unexpected ways. His childhood scent memories, from his grandfather's shaving soap to the smell of old pharmacies, frequently inspire his work, incorporating rich
woods, animalic accords, and materials like
licorice and
vetiver.
His composition Powder & Dust, co-created with Yana Lysenko, won the Art and Olfaction Award in the Artisan category in 2019. When Pritzkoleit closed SP Parfums in 2020, this award-winning fragrance was reborn as Zoologist
Cockatiel, a powdery, elegant composition featuring
rhubarb and
raspberry. He also created Zoologist
Hyrax, a bold animalic fragrance built around
elemi,
saffron, and
pink pepper, inspired by the resinous hyraceum secretion of the rock hyrax.
