Origin and Extraction
Petitgrain is extracted from the leaves and green twigs of the bitter orange tree (Citrus aurantium), typically through steam distillation. Unlike neroli, which is extracted from the tree's blossoms, petitgrain is derived from the tree's foliage, primarily in regions like France, Italy, Paraguay, and Brazil.
History and Culture
Petitgrain has been used in perfumery since the 18th century, originating in France. It was initially a byproduct of neroli production, but quickly became valued for its own unique aromatic properties. Traditionally used in eau de cologne and traditional Mediterranean fragrances, it remains an important ingredient in modern perfumery, symbolizing freshness and natural elegance.
Chemistry and Molecular Structure
Petitgrain's chemical composition includes linalool, linalyl acetate, geraniol, and nerol. These terpenic compounds contribute to its distinctive fresh, green, and slightly woody aroma. The molecular structure of these compounds provides the characteristic crisp and herbaceous scent profile.
