Origin and Extraction
Peru Balsam is a natural resinous substance obtained from the bark of the Myroxylon balsamum tree, native to Central and South America, particularly El Salvador, Peru, and Colombia. It is traditionally extracted through a process of bark incision and collection of the balsamic resin, which is then processed and refined.
History and Culture
Peru Balsam has a rich history of medicinal and aromatic use dating back to indigenous Mesoamerican cultures. It was traditionally used for healing wounds, treating skin conditions, and in religious and ceremonial practices. In European perfumery, it became prominent in the 19th century and has since been a valued ingredient in classic and modern fragrances.
Chemistry and Molecular Structure
Peru Balsam is composed of complex chemical compounds including cinnamein (a mixture of cinnamic acid esters), benzyl benzoate, and various terpenes.
