Origin and Extraction
Lavender is primarily cultivated in Provence, France, as well as in other Mediterranean regions like Spain, Italy, and Bulgaria. The essential oil is extracted through steam distillation of the flowering tops of the Lavandula angustifolia plant, also known as true lavender or English lavender.
History and Culture
Lavender has a rich history dating back to ancient Roman and Greek civilizations, where it was used for bathing, cooking, and medicinal purposes. In medieval times, it was believed to protect against evil and was used in love potions. Today, it's widely used in aromatherapy for its calming properties and is a staple in French perfumery. Famous lavender-prominent fragrances include Jicky by Guerlain, Pour Un Homme by Caron, and Dior Homme.
Chemistry and Molecular Structure
Lavender's distinctive scent comes from its complex essential oil composition, primarily containing linalool, linalyl acetate, camphor, and various terpenes.
