Cardamom

Cardamom is a complex, warm, and spicy fragrance note with a distinctive sweet-sharp aroma. It has an intense, slightly green and herbal quality with hints of citrus and a warm, resinous undertone. The scent is both refreshing and deeply aromatic, combining elements of pepper, mint, and a subtle woody warmth.
Origin and Extraction
Cardamom is primarily sourced from the seeds of the Elettaria cardamomum plant, native to the tropical forests of southern India, particularly Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The extraction is typically done through steam distillation of the dried seeds, which preserves its complex aromatic compounds. Some high-quality cardamom essential oils are also produced through CO2 extraction.
History and Culture
Cardamom has a rich history dating back thousands of years, originating in India and widely used in Ayurvedic medicine and culinary traditions. It was a valuable trade commodity along the ancient spice routes and is considered a luxury spice. In perfumery, it has been prized for centuries in Middle Eastern and Indian fragrance traditions, often used in personal scents, incense, and traditional perfume preparations.
Chemistry and Molecular Structure
The primary aromatic compounds in cardamom are terpenes, including cineole, α-terpinyl acetate, and sabinene. These molecules contribute to its complex, spicy-sweet scent profile. The essential oil contains approximately 40-50% of these terpene compounds, which are responsible for its distinctive aromatic characteristics.
