Atlas Cedar

Atlas Cedar brings a warmer, sweeter side of cedarwood to the table. Where other cedars stay dry and austere, Atlas Cedar wraps you in a soft, creamy woodiness with gentle resinous and almost honeyed undertones. Think of it as cedarwood's more approachable, sun-warmed cousin - still unmistakably woody, but with a rounded, slightly oily richness that lingers beautifully on skin.

Origin and Extraction
Atlas Cedar (Cedrus atlantica) grows in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco and Algeria, thriving at elevations between 1,300 and 2,200 meters. The essential oil is steam-distilled from the wood and sawdust, yielding a thick, golden-amber liquid with exceptional longevity. Morocco remains the primary producer, with the Azrou and Ifrane forests being particularly prized sources.
History and Culture
The Atlas Cedar has been sacred to Berber communities for centuries, used in traditional construction and as incense in spiritual ceremonies. Ancient Egyptians imported cedarwood oil - likely from this species - for embalming and temple rituals. Today, the Atlas Cedar forests of Morocco are a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and sustainable harvesting has become essential as demand for the oil continues to grow in luxury perfumery.
Chemistry and Molecular Structure
Atlas Cedar oil is rich in sesquiterpenes, particularly alpha-himachalene, beta-himachalene, and gamma-himachalene, which together make up over 50% of the oil. These himachalene compounds are responsible for its characteristically warm, sweet-woody profile that distinguishes it from other cedarwoods. Atlantone, another key molecule, adds the creamy, slightly balsamic nuance that perfumers love.
