They were first developed in the late 1980s with the introduction of Dihydromyrcenol and other synthetic molecules that could recreate the sensation of water and sea air. Natural extracts like sea salt, seaweed, and marine algae can also contribute to aquatic scent profiles.

Aquatic notes revolutionized the fragrance industry in the late 1980s and early 1990s, marking a significant departure from the heavy, complex scents of previous decades. The launch of Davidoff Cool Water in 1988 is often credited with popularizing the aquatic fragrance genre. These scents reflected a cultural shift towards minimalism, sportiness, and a more casual approach to personal fragrance, aligning with the emerging fitness and wellness trends of the time.
Chemistry and Molecular Structure
Aquatic notes are primarily composed of synthetic molecules like Dihydromyrcenol, Calone (1,2-Pentanedione), and Helional.
