Ali Aljaberi grows up in Abu Dhabi, surrounded by the scents of the Arabian world - oud, frankincense, amber. Early on, he begins collecting traditional fragrant ingredients from the desert region. But instead of staying within tradition, he travels to Paris to study French perfumery.
In 2014, he launches his house under the name AJ Arabia. Two years later, it becomes Widian - an Arabic word for "valleys" that evokes the landscapes of his homeland: the desert valleys of Liwa, the green valleys of Al Ain.
"Your perfume is your unseen personality; it expresses your mood and reveals your secrets."
- Ali Aljaberi, founder of Widian
His approach is radically pragmatic: Aljaberi tests every new fragrance by presenting it anonymously at luxury department stores. If the perfumery head can match it to an existing product, he's failed.

Widian isn't simply "Arabian perfumery for the West." The brand thinks from both sides simultaneously. Aljaberi works with European perfumers like Jean-Claude Astier, Philippine Courtiere, and Jordi Fernandez - but the creative brief comes from Arabian culture.
The bottles tell this story most clearly: their design is inspired by the architecture of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi, crafted from crystal by BREED. These aren't bottles that end up in a drawer.
"I go to a large, luxury department store and spray my perfume on a blotter. I give it to the head of that perfumery and ask, 'which one is this?' If he or she can bring up the name of one of the perfumes they already have, that means I have failed. I didn't create something new."
- Ali Aljaberi, in The Perfume Society
The philosophy "If you like it, just wear it" sounds simple but it's a statement: all Widian fragrances are unisex, not as a marketing move but out of conviction. In Arabian fragrance tradition, this borderlessness has always been the norm.
Widian organises its fragrances into collections, each with its own distinct character.
The Black Collection was where it all began - a journey from Orient to Occident. This is where you'll find the fragrances that most directly embody the bridge between both worlds. Spicy, smoky compositions with depth.
The Gold Collection is the oriental heart: oud, amber, frankincense in their purest form. If you're looking for Widian's Arabian core, this is where to start.
The Velvet Collection moves into floral-spicy territory. Compositions that balance light and shadow, East and West - more complex than you'd expect from the first spray.
The Sapphire Collection travels the world: each fragrance is a tribute to a specific city. London pairs British elegance with Arabian understatement, Aswan surprises with fruity leather.
The collection offers the right entry point for different tastes. These five showcase the breadth of the brand.
Widian is expensive. The crystal bottles, the natural raw materials, the intricate compositions - that all costs money. But unlike some luxury brands, this isn't about display.
"So many fragrance collections launch too many too close together - it becomes overwhelming for the customer. My thinking is, why not just release them more slowly, and don't try to flood an already overcrowded market."
- Ali Aljaberi, in The Perfume Society
You can feel this restraint: Widian has a manageable portfolio, but every fragrance delivers. The longevity is excellent, the projection present without being overbearing. Quality that unfolds over hours - not over Instagram posts.
Widian fragrances are investments - you want to know what you're getting into before committing. The compositions are complex and develop over hours. London opens with fresh cypress and lands on luxurious raspberry-leather. Liwa unfolds its oriental magic slowly, layer by layer.
That depth can't be judged from a test strip in a shop. With the sample box, you can compare different collections on skin and decide in your own time which Widian is right for you.
