The story
For more than two decades Ferry Hansen wrote about fragrance as beauty director at Men's Health and Women's Health, interviewing some of the world's best known perfumers. During a sabbatical at Urban Scents in Berlin he discovered a passion for creating scents himself and founded Ferry Hansen Perfumes GmbH in Hamburg.
His first fragrance, No.1, was created with perfumer Hyacinte Cassam Chenaï in Grasse. More than 90 ingredients deliberately question the classic fragrance pyramid: white flowers do not fade after the opening but remain like an echo all the way into the base.

From beauty journalism to his own fragrance

For more than two decades Ferry Hansen was beauty director at Men's Health and Women's Health. During that time he interviewed perfumers such as Quentin Bisch, Jean-Claude Ellena and Olivier Polge, sat on the jury of the Deutsche Duftstars and received several industry awards for his fragrance storytelling concepts.
During a sabbatical at Urban Scents in Berlin he began to create fragrances of his own. That led to Ferry Hansen Perfumes GmbH, based in Hamburg. He decided together with designer Christian von der Heide that the brand should carry his name, because the project is deeply personal.

Welcome to the club

No.1 tells of a private club in the middle of Abu Dhabi's scorching desert. Guests are welcomed by lavish bouquets of lilies, azaleas, jasmine and tuberose. The heart brings black tea with almond milk and pastries with chocolate, cinnamon and caramel.
The base leads into wood-panelled rooms with oud, heavy leather armchairs and velvet curtains holding traces of tobacco smoke and a cannabis accord. Throughout, the white flowers stay present, quieter but never quite gone.

Made with longtime companions

No.1 was created by Hyacinte Cassam Chenaï, whom Ferry Hansen met at Urban Scents in Berlin. She now works in Grasse at The French Fragrance House, where the fragrance oil is also made. According to Ferry, her work was so precise from the start that neither a reformulation nor further briefings were needed.
The bottle with its atomiser ball was designed by Christian von der Heide, whom Ferry has known in the industry for many years. The photography is by Robert Grischek, a companion of almost three decades.
