Herkunft und Extraktion
Tonkabohnen sind Samen des Dipteryx odorata Baumes, der in den tropischen Regionen Südamerikas, insbesondere Venezuela, Brasilien und Kolumbien, heimisch ist. Sie werden üblicherweise durch einen Mazerationsprozess extrahiert, bei dem die getrockneten Bohnen in Alkohol eingeweicht werden, um ihre aromatischen Verbindungen freizusetzen.
Geschichte und Kultur
Die Tonkabohne hat eine reiche Geschichte in der Parfümerie und traditionellen Medizin. Indigene südamerikanische Kulturen nutzten sie für medizinische Zwecke und als Geschmacksverstärker. In der Parfümerie gewann sie Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts an Bedeutung und wurde zu einem Schlüsselingrediens in vielen klassischen und modernen Düften, einschließlich Guerlains Shalimar und zahlreicher zeitgenössischer Nischenparfüms.
Chemie und Molekularstruktur
Die primäre aromatische Verbindung in der Tonkabohne ist Cumarin, eine natürlich vorkommende organische Verbindung mit einem süßen, heuartigen Duft. Cumarin hat die Molekülformel C9H6O2 und ist verantwortlich für das charakteristische warme, süße Profil der Tonkabohne. Sie enthält auch andere Verbindungen wie Benzaldehyd und Vanillin, die zu ihrem komplexen Duft beitragen.
