David Seth Moltz: The Musical Perfumer Behind D.S. & Durga

From Musician to Master Perfumer: A Creative Journey

David Seth Moltz represents a unique voice in contemporary perfumery, bringing his background as a musician and storyteller to the art of scent creation. Born in 1980 in Swampscott, Massachusetts, Moltz's early life was shaped by the coastal New England environment - the ocean air, winter forests, and Salt Spray roses that would later influence his olfactory palette. His parents, both educators in English and history, fostered his connection to words, music, and narrative from an early age.
Before discovering perfumery, Moltz pursued music professionally, playing guitar and singing in various bands while studying film and history at Boston University. This musical foundation profoundly influences his approach to fragrance composition, as he often describes creating perfumes in terms similar to composing songs. His transition to perfumery began around 2007 when he started experimenting with archaic recipes and making bay rum as gifts for friends. Encouraged by his wife Kavi Ahuja Moltz, who handles the architectural design aspects of their brand, he founded D.S. & Durga in Brooklyn in 2008.
As a self-taught perfumer, Moltz developed his own unique system through experimentation with aromatic materials and studying old herbalist texts. His approach differs from traditional European perfumery training, allowing him to create unconventional compositions that tell stories rather than simply smell pleasant. This narrative-driven philosophy has become the hallmark of D.S. & Durga, with each fragrance designed to transport wearers to specific times, places, or experiences.

Signature Scents and Olfactory Innovation

Moltz's creative portfolio showcases his ability to transform unusual concepts into wearable art. His breakthrough fragrance Debaser, inspired by the Pixies song, demonstrates his talent for translating musical and cultural references into scent. The composition balances green fig, coconut milk, and blonde woods to create what many consider a modern classic in the fig fragrance category.
His mastery of atmospheric storytelling shines in creations like Burning Barbershop, which imagines the aftermath of a 1891 fire in a New York barbershop, combining traditional fougère elements with distinctive smoky notes. Mississippi Medicine showcases his ability to work with challenging materials like birch tar and incense to evoke ancient rituals and forest ceremonies.
Moltz's technical innovation extends to fragrance enhancers like I Don't Know What and Leatherize, designed to layer with other perfumes while being perfectly wearable alone. His exploration of unconventional gourmands appears in Pistachio, which combines the titular nut with earthy patchouli rather than traditional sweet notes.
The perfumer's commitment to storytelling through scent has earned D.S. & Durga recognition as a pioneering force in artisanal perfumery. With fragrances like Amber Kiso evoking Japanese temple rituals and El Cosmico capturing the essence of the Texas desert, Moltz continues to push boundaries while maintaining the narrative integrity that defines his artistic vision.
