Ylang-Ylang

Ylang-ylang is a rich, intense, and deeply floral fragrance note with a sweet, exotic, and slightly fruity character. The aroma is reminiscent of jasmine and banana, combining sensuality with a green, slightly spicy undertone.
Origin and Extraction
Ylang-ylang is extracted from the flowers of the Cananga odorata tree, native to the tropical regions of Southeast Asia, particularly the Philippines, Indonesia, and parts of Malaysia. The essential oil is obtained through steam distillation of the fresh yellow flowers, with different grades of oil (extra, first, second, third) produced depending on the timing of extraction during the distillation process.
History and Culture
Ylang-ylang has a rich cultural history in Southeast Asia, where it is traditionally used in aromatherapy, traditional medicine, and as a hair and skin treatment. In the Philippines, it is known as 'ilang-ilang' and has been used in traditional healing practices. The flower is also significant in local wedding ceremonies and is considered a symbol of love and sensuality. In modern perfumery, it has been celebrated since the late 19th century as an exotic and luxurious fragrance ingredient.
Chemistry and Molecular Structure
Ylang-ylang essential oil contains complex chemical compounds including linalool, geraniol, benzyl acetate, and eugenol. These molecules contribute to its distinctive sweet, floral, and slightly spicy aroma. The oil's composition can vary depending on the extraction method and the specific variety of Cananga odorata, with different molecular configurations responsible for its nuanced and multi-layered scent profile.
