Nutmeg

Nutmeg has a warm, spicy, slightly sweet, and woody aroma with a distinctive, rich, and complex scent profile. It offers a sharp, slightly peppery initial impression that softens into a smooth, round, and comforting fragrance note with hints of warmth and depth.
Origin and Extraction
Nutmeg is derived from the seed of the Myristica fragrans tree, native to the Banda Islands in Indonesia. The seed is carefully dried and then ground or steam-distilled to extract its essential oil. The Spice Islands (Moluccas) have historically been the primary source of high-quality nutmeg.
History and Culture
Nutmeg has a rich history as a valuable spice, once worth more than its weight in gold. It was a crucial trade commodity during the Age of Exploration, with European powers fighting for control of the Spice Islands. In perfumery, it has been used since the Renaissance, valued for its warming and exotic qualities. Notable fragrances featuring nutmeg include Tom Ford's Tobacco Vanille and Serge Lutens' Arabie.
Chemistry and Molecular Structure
Nutmeg's distinctive aroma comes from its complex chemical composition, primarily composed of monoterpenes and phenylpropanoids. Key compounds include myristicin, elemicin, and eugenol, which contribute to its spicy, warm, and slightly hallucinogenic properties. These molecules interact to create the characteristic rich and complex scent profile.
