Chemistry and Molecular Structure
The primary active compound in eucalyptus is 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol), a monoterpene with the molecular formula C10H18O. This compound is responsible for the characteristic cooling, camphoraceous scent and provides many of the plant's medicinal properties. Other significant compounds include alpha-pinene, limonene, and various terpenic alcohols.
