Resinous Notes

Tolu Balsam

Tolu balsam has a rich, warm, sweet, and slightly spicy aromatic profile with woody and resinous undertones. It offers a complex fragrance that is simultaneously balsamic, vanilla-like, and reminiscent of cinnamon and clove, with a deep, smooth character.
Origin and Extraction
Tolu balsam is a natural resinous substance obtained from the Myroxylon balsamum tree, native to Colombia and parts of South America. It is extracted by making incisions in the tree bark and collecting the resinous sap, which is then processed and dried.
History and Culture
Tolu balsam has been used for centuries in traditional medicine, particularly in South America, for its healing properties. It was used in treatments for respiratory issues, wounds, and as an antiseptic. In perfumery, it became popular in the 19th century and has been a key ingredient in many classic and modern fragrances.
Chemistry and Molecular Structure
Tolu balsam contains complex chemical compounds including benzoic acid, cinnamic acid, and various essential oils. Its primary aromatic components are responsible for its distinctive sweet, balsamic, and slightly spicy scent profile, with molecular structures that contribute to its long-lasting and warm fragrance characteristics.
