Mathieu Nardin: From Grasse Heritage to Modern Perfumery

A Grasse-Born Perfumer's Journey to Global Recognition

Mathieu Nardin represents the perfect blend of traditional French perfumery heritage and contemporary innovation. Born and raised in Grasse, the historic heart of French fragrance creation, Nardin's path to becoming a respected perfumer was almost predestined. His family's deep roots in the fragrance industry - with grandparents who cultivated jasmine, roses, and verbena - provided him with an intimate understanding of natural raw materials from childhood.
This early exposure to the world of scent proved invaluable when Nardin pursued formal training at ISIPCA in Versailles, one of France's most prestigious fragrance schools. What set him apart from his peers wasn't just theoretical knowledge, but his profound understanding of ingredients and raw materials gained through years of participating in flower harvests. At just 23, he was appointed as a perfumer at Robertet, marking the beginning of a career that would span multiple continents and prestigious fragrance houses.
Nardin's career trajectory took him from the lavender fields of Provence to the bustling streets of New York, where he worked in Robertet's American office from 2013. This international experience broadened his perspective and allowed him to understand different market preferences. In 2018, he joined MANE as a Senior Perfumer, where he continues to create fragrances that showcase his unique ability to merge traditional techniques with modern sensibilities.

Signature Creations and Artistic Philosophy

Nardin's creative philosophy centers on revealing the most beautiful facets of natural materials while maintaining technical invisibility that allows artistic concepts to flow effortlessly. His portfolio demonstrates remarkable versatility, from the spicy sophistication of Nitro Noir to the serene woody elegance of Santal Sky, both created for Kierin NYC. These fragrances showcase his ability to create distinct olfactory personalities that resonate with modern fragrance lovers.
His work with Sunday Brunch exemplifies his talent for translating everyday experiences into compelling scent stories. The fragrance captures the essence of a perfect weekend morning through Earl Grey tea, Italian bergamot, and jasmine - a composition that feels both familiar and innovative. This approach reflects Nardin's belief that inspiration can come from anywhere, whether it's literature, travel, or simple life moments.
Perhaps most impressive is his creation of Zefiro for Xerjoff's prestigious 1861 Collection. This complex oriental fragrance demonstrates his mastery of challenging ingredients like frankincense and oud, creating a sophisticated tribute to Rome's Baroque heritage. The fragrance's intricate blend of spices, resins, and precious woods showcases Nardin's ability to work with luxury brands while maintaining his distinctive style.
Nardin's contributions to modern perfumery extend beyond individual creations. His work represents a new generation of perfumers who honor traditional French techniques while embracing global influences and contemporary aesthetics, making him a significant voice in today's fragrance landscape.
