John Stephen: Master of British Niche Perfumery

Five Decades of Fragrance Artistry and Innovation

John Stephen stands as one of Britain's most accomplished perfumers, with over fifty years of experience creating exceptional fragrances. His journey began in rural England, where childhood memories of wildflowers and his father's tomato garden sparked a lifelong passion for scent.
After studying chemistry at the University of Bath, Stephen transformed his family's failed perfumery venture into The Cotswold Perfumery in Bourton-on-the-Water. This scientific foundation perfectly complements his artistic vision, allowing him to navigate complex industry regulations while pushing creative boundaries.
Stephen's approach blends traditional methods with modern innovation. He views perfumery as storytelling through scent, creating olfactory narratives that are both emotionally resonant and technically masterful. His philosophy centers on making individualistic statements rather than simply using rare ingredients.
As one of only six independent perfumers in the UK, Stephen has earned recognition from the industry's most prestigious organizations. He holds memberships in the Société Internationale des Parfumers-Créateurs, British Society of Perfumers, and International Fragrance Association. His royal commission in 1999 to create two fragrances for Queen Elizabeth II further cemented his reputation for excellence.

Notable Creations and Lasting Impact

Stephen's portfolio spans multiple acclaimed brands, showcasing his versatility across different fragrance families. His work with Boadicea the Victorious includes creating their entire inaugural line, establishing the brand's reputation for complex, emotionally-driven compositions. For Electimuss London, he crafted Auster, a Mediterranean-inspired fragrance that perfectly demonstrates his ability to balance contrasting elements.
Auster exemplifies Stephen's mastery of spice and citrus harmony. The fragrance opens with bright lemon and exotic star anise, evolving through sweet geranium and clove before settling into a rich base of ambergris, cedarwood, and patchouli. This composition showcases his talent for creating sophisticated, unisex fragrances that tell compelling olfactory stories.
Beyond creating fragrances, Stephen dedicates himself to education. Since 2003, he has run perfume-making courses at The Cotswold Perfumery, attracting students worldwide. These programs range from introductory workshops to advanced five-day courses covering commercial aspects like toxicology and legislation.
His collaborations extend to Czech & Speake, Naughton & Wilson, and Fragonard, demonstrating his ability to adapt his artistic vision to different brand aesthetics while maintaining his signature quality and creativity.
