Jeanne-Marie Faugier: French Perfumer Crafting Mediterranean Dreams
From Chemistry Lab to Fragrance Artistry
Jeanne-Marie Faugier's path to perfumery began with a passion for science and chemistry in her native Paris. This scientific foundation would prove essential when she entered the prestigious Roure perfumery school (now part of Givaudan) in 1986. Her early fascination with molecular structures and chemical interactions naturally evolved into an understanding of how fragrance ingredients work together to create emotional experiences.
After completing her training, Faugier spent 13 transformative years at Givaudan, working across multiple locations including Grasse, Geneva, and Paris. This extensive experience gave her deep knowledge of both traditional French perfumery techniques and modern fragrance development. She specialized in creating new molecules for fine fragrances and personal care products, building expertise that spans the entire perfumery spectrum.
Her career progression took her through various prestigious companies including Colgate-Palmolive, TechnicoFlor, and Symrise before joining Firmenich in 2018 as a Senior Perfumer. At Firmenich, she works closely with the Paris perfumer team on major brand projects and handles complex fine fragrance reformulations. This diverse experience across different companies and fragrance categories has shaped her versatile approach to scent creation.
Faugier's artistic philosophy centers on bringing pleasure and well-being to customers through carefully crafted formulas. She describes herself as an artisan at heart, approaching each creation with precision and passion. Her work often reflects a deep connection to nature, art, and personal experiences, aiming to create fragrances that tell stories and evoke powerful memories.
Signature Creations and Mediterranean Mastery
Faugier's most celebrated creation, Vêpres Siciliennes for Parfums MDCI, perfectly exemplifies her ability to capture the essence of place and emotion in fragrance form. Released in 2009, this Mediterranean masterpiece opens with bright citrus notes of mandarin, grapefruit, and orange, accompanied by fresh lily of the valley and magnolia. The composition develops into a rich floral heart featuring orange blossom, heliotrope, jasmine, and tuberose, before settling into a warm base of vanilla, peach, and osmanthus.
The creation process for Vêpres Siciliennes showcased Faugier's patience and dedication to perfection. Claude Marchal of Parfums MDCI noted her "infinite grace and patience" during their collaboration, which took several months to achieve the perfect balance. The fragrance demonstrates her skill in blending traditional perfumery techniques with contemporary trends, creating something both timeless and modern.
Her portfolio extends beyond niche houses to include work for major brands like Lancôme, Yves Rocher, and L'Occitane en Provence. Notable creations include Lancôme Ô d'Azur, which captures the freshness of Mediterranean coastlines, and L'Occitane's Fleurs de Cerisier, showcasing her ability to interpret delicate floral themes. For Frapin, she created multiple fragrances including Caravelle Épicée and the recent Oud Forever, demonstrating her versatility across different fragrance families.
Faugier's influence extends beyond her own creations through her mentorship of young perfumers. Her ability to explain ingredients and their applications has inspired the next generation of fragrance creators. With over 30 years of experience, she continues to contribute to perfumery's evolution while maintaining the artisanal approach that defines her work.
