Aliénor Massenet: Master of Contrasts and Emotional Perfumery
A Journey from Art to Olfactory Excellence
Aliénor Massenet's path to becoming one of perfumery's most distinctive voices began in an artistic Parisian family with Hungarian roots. Growing up surrounded by painters and chemists, she developed an early sensitivity to scents that would later define her career. After studying art history, Massenet discovered her true calling through a serendipitous internship at Firmenich at age 17. What started as a brief exploration became a lifelong passion, leading her to train under legendary perfumers Sophia Grojsman and Pierre Wargnye at IFF New York.
Massenet's creative philosophy centers on emotional storytelling through scent. She describes her approach as highly visual, imagining fragrances as geometric forms and associating raw materials with colors and emotions. Her signature style embraces intense contrasts - pairing unlikely ingredients like sandalwood with pumpkin, or creating fresh aquatic compositions that seamlessly transition into warm leather accords. Nearly all her creations feature her "lucky" ingredients:
myrrh and
labdanum, which she incorporates for both spiritual reasons and their distinctive licorice-like qualities that add sensuality to her compositions.
Currently serving as VP Senior Perfumer at Symrise, Massenet has built an impressive portfolio working with major brands including Giorgio Armani, Lancôme, Diesel, and Maison Margiela. Her independent spirit and technical mastery have earned her multiple Fragrance Foundation Awards, establishing her as a perfumer who creates scents that evoke profound emotions and memories.
Iconic Creations and Olfactory Innovations
Massenet's most celebrated work includes her long-standing collaboration with Memo Paris, where she has created nearly their entire fragrance library since 2007. Her masterful Cuirs Nomades collection showcases her ability to reimagine leather in unexpected ways.

Irish Leather introduces innovative green mate absolute to create a fresh, herbaceous leather experience.

Beyond leather compositions, Massenet excels in diverse olfactory territories.
Winter Palace exemplifies her talent for complex tea fragrances, blending citrus brightness with warming spices and vanilla.
Marfa showcases her floral expertise through creamy tuberose and orange blossom, while
Tamarindo reveals her playful side with tropical pineapple and vanilla combinations.
Her influence extends beyond Memo Paris through acclaimed creations like Maison Margiela's Replica Jazz Club and Diesel's Only the Brave. Massenet's commitment to sustainability and ethical sourcing aligns with modern perfumery values, often working directly with farmers to ensure fair compensation. Her dedication to mentorship and therapeutic scent work, including sessions for trauma survivors, demonstrates how she views perfumery as both art and healing. Through her innovative approach to contrasts and emotional depth, Massenet continues to push boundaries while creating fragrances that resonate deeply with wearers worldwide.
