Lorenzo Pazzaglia: From Kitchen to Perfumery Mastery

Culinary Roots Shape Olfactory Artistry

Lorenzo Pazzaglia's journey into perfumery began in the most unexpected place - his father's restaurant kitchen in Italy. Growing up surrounded by the aromatic symphony of herbs, spices, and cooking ingredients, Pazzaglia developed an extraordinary sensitivity to scent that would later define his career as a perfumer. This early exposure to complex flavor profiles and aromatic combinations laid the foundation for his unique approach to fragrance creation.
After following in his family's footsteps to become a chef and eventually taking over the family restaurant Il Poggio in Cagli, Italy, Pazzaglia found himself drawn to explore scent beyond the culinary world. His signature dish, Spaghetti alla Carbonara, became so renowned that he later immortalized it in fragrance form with Carbonara, a bold spicy-gourmand composition featuring pepper, coconut, and amber notes.
What sets Pazzaglia apart in the niche perfumery world is his commitment to creating highly concentrated Extrait de Parfums, typically containing 32-40% essential oils. This decision stems from his frustration with fragrances that fade too quickly - a problem he solved by crafting intensely powerful compositions that offer exceptional longevity and projection. His philosophy centers on creating "olfactory experiences that tell stories and evoke deep emotions," treating each fragrance as an extension of his culinary artistry.

Signature Creations and Performance-Driven Philosophy

Pazzaglia's fragrance portfolio showcases his fearless experimentation with unusual note combinations and his mastery of high-impact compositions. His Sea Collection, featuring powerhouses like Black Sea and Dream Sea, demonstrates his ability to capture the essence of marine environments while maintaining the rich complexity that defines his work. Black Sea particularly exemplifies his "Italian chaotic style" - a dark, stormy marine fragrance that combines salt, ozone, and algae with unexpected floral touches.
His Self Portrait Collection reveals more personal aspects of his artistry. Pax, described as his "olfactory self-portrait," weaves together fruity passion fruit and black grape with spicy cardamom and rich amber, creating a complex narrative of his multifaceted personality. Esco Pazzo, meaning "I'm going crazy," represents his modern interpretation of classic fougère structures, enhanced with oriental touches and amber nuances.
The perfumer's gourmand expertise shines through creations like Summer Hammer, a tropical piña colada-inspired fragrance that won recognition in Madrid, and his Vanilla Collection featuring Van Py Rhum, which masterfully combines multiple vanilla varieties with aged rum and Indonesian patchouli. Each creation reflects his belief that genuine artistry requires both technical skill and emotional authenticity, resulting in fragrances that leave lasting impressions and create devoted followings among fragrance enthusiasts seeking truly distinctive olfactory experiences.
