Brazilian Rosewood

Brazilian Rosewood (Aniba rosaeodora) is native to the Amazon rainforest in Brazil. Due to over-harvesting and environmental concerns, its extraction is now strictly regulated. The essential oil is traditionally obtained through steam distillation of the wood, but sustainable alternatives and synthetic replacements are increasingly used to protect the species.

Historically important in Brazilian indigenous cultures for its aromatic properties, Brazilian Rosewood became globally significant in the perfume industry during the 20th century. However, due to extensive logging and its endangered status, international trade of the wood has been severely restricted since 1992 under CITES regulations, making it a rare and precious material in modern perfumery.

The key aromatic compounds in Brazilian Rosewood are linalool and other terpenic alcohols, which contribute to its distinctive rose-like and woody scent profile. These molecules are responsible for the wood's complex aromatic characteristics, providing its soft, sweet, and slightly spicy nuances.
