History and Culture
Bergamot has a rich history originating in Italy, where it was first cultivated in the 16th century. The name is believed to derive from the Italian city of Bergamo. Chemistry and Molecular Structure
Bergamot essential oil contains complex chemical compounds, primarily limonene, linalool, and bergapten. Limonene provides the characteristic citrusy scent, while linalool contributes to its subtle floral undertones. Bergapten is a photosensitizing compound that can cause skin sensitivity when exposed to sunlight.
