Luca Maffei

Luca Maffei: Italian Perfumer Redefining Niche Fragrance
From Family Legacy to Creative Mastery
Born into Italy's fragrance heritage in 1985, Luca Maffei transformed childhood exposure to raw materials into artistic mastery. His father Marco's work with major fragrance companies like Symrise provided early inspiration, but Luca carved his own path through dedicated study and creative vision.
After initial economics studies in Milan, Maffei followed his true calling to Grasse at age 22. Under the guidance of renowned perfumer Madame Françoise Marin, he mastered the Jean Carles method and developed his signature approach to scent creation. This classical foundation, combined with apprenticeship under Vincent Ricord at Expressions Parfumées, shaped his understanding of both traditional techniques and modern innovation.
In 2011, Maffei co-founded Atelier Fragranze Milano with his father, establishing himself as both CEO and lead perfumer. His philosophy centers on understanding each brand's story and translating their vision into olfactory art. He views perfumery as pure artistry rather than science, prioritizing creative dialogue and emotional connection over technical formulation.
Maffei's collaborative approach has led to partnerships with prestigious niche brands including Masque Milano, Jul et Mad Paris, Carthusia, and Laboratorio Olfattivo. His ability to blend traditional perfumery elements with contemporary twists has earned recognition from the Société Française des Parfumeurs, which welcomed him as a member in 2014.
Award-Winning Creations and Innovative Style
Maffei's creative genius shines through award-winning compositions that challenge conventional boundaries. His Black Pepper & Sandalwood for Acca Kappa and Néa for Jul et Mad Paris both claimed Independent Category victories at the Art and Olfaction Awards in Los Angeles, establishing his international reputation.
The perfumer's signature style involves masterful counterbalancing of materials, creating immediate impact while maintaining complexity. His work with Delicious Bay exemplifies this approach, combining aquatic freshness with oriental warmth through innovative use of calone overdose alongside traditional elements like saffron, honey, and white oud. This gourmand-marine fusion demonstrates his ability to merge seemingly opposing fragrance families into harmonious compositions.
Maffei draws inspiration from beauty in all forms - art exhibitions, fine dining, and nature's endless variety. His working method involves simultaneous projects across different olfactory families, preventing mental saturation while maintaining creative perspective. Some fragrances emerge quickly, while others like L'Attesa for Masque Milano require eighteen months and hundreds of modifications.
With over 50 created fragrances spanning mainstream and niche markets, Maffei continues pushing creative boundaries. His greatest ambition remains creating "olfactory shock" - that transformative moment when fragrance transcends mere scent to become emotional experience. This dedication to artistic excellence positions him among Italy's most promising perfumers, carrying forward the nation's rich fragrance heritage into contemporary niche perfumery.
